Adult Fairytale Retelling

Charm is a beautifully illustrated re-telling of the Cinderella story which takes all the much-loved elements of the classic fairytale (the handsome prince, the fairy godmother, the enchanted mouse, the beautiful girl and, of course, the iconic balls) and puts a modern spin on the characters, their motives and their desires. This is fun, contemporary, sexy, and perfect for fans of ONCE UPON A TIME, GRIMM, SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN and more. This edition contains 15 original pen and ink illustrations by Les Edwards.

Goodreads

Charm is the second book in the Tales of the Kingdom series by Sarah Pinborough. This book just like it predecessor is an adult fairytale retelling. Sarah’s story is very similar to the original, this story is dark and gruesome but Sarah has put her own twists on the story. Other characters from the previous book, Poison, have vital roles in Charm. Also there are hints to other fairytales that you might know and a character appears near the end that I have a feeling will lead to the final story in the series.

In this Cinderella is a spoiled little brat who can’t really empathize with people nor can she see past her own wants and needs. This Cinderella has to take a long dark journey before she starts to become a better person. Most of these characters (themselves) are horrible people in some way or another but there is one character I wish to appear in Beauty and I hope that I get to see him and another story gets wrapped up.

I did have some problems with this story, somethings are less believable (and I am not talking about the fairytale parts) some social situations feel a little forced or awkward. Overall all it was a good retelling and I love how she has interwoven both stories in the series. I will remind you that this series is for 18+ and shouldn’t be read my anyone younger.

Overall ⭐⭐⭐
