Book Review

Skin As White As Snow, Lips As Red As Blood….

hearts-at-stake

It’s just a couple of days after Christmas and I hope that everyone who celebrates is enjoying the holidays. My family has scheduling conflicts so we won’t be celebrating together until New Years Day. That sucks but at least we still get to celebrate and I am looking forward to the books I will get, even though it’s like pulling teeth to get my family to give me books. They ask what do you want for Christmas, I say books, and they’re like no pick something else. Why be so difficult it’s all I want just get them, below is my review…I need better transition sentences.

Hearts At Stake (Drake Chronicles #1) by Alyxandra Harvey

On Solange’s sixteenth birthday, she is going to wake up dead. As if that’s not bad enough, she also has to outwit her seven overprotective older brothers, avoid the politics involved with being the only daughter born to an ancient vampire dynasty, and elude Kieran Black—agent of an anti-vampire league who is searching for his father’s killer and is intent on staking Solange and her entire family.

Luckily she has her own secret weapon—her human best friend Lucy—who is willing to defend Solange’s right to a normal life, whether she’s being smothered by her well-intentioned brothers or abducted by a power-hungry queen. Two unlikely alliances are formed in a race to save Solange’s eternal life—Lucy and Solange’s brother Nicholas, and Solange and Kieran Black—in a dual romance that is guaranteed to jump start any romance-lover’s heart.

Even fans of the genre who’ve seen it all will find a fresh read with kick-butt characters and family dynamics that ring true for all brothers and sisters—vampire or otherwise.

Okay I just loved this book. This is the first time I have read anything my Alyxandra Harvey and now I am thinking thinks like “why haven’t I read anything by her” and “what took me so long to find this book”? I was totally surprised by my love for this novel.

Hearts at Stake is the first book in the Drake Chronicles and I am most definitely looking forward to the rest of the series. So if you haven’t guessed by the title, this is a vampire book and in my opinion it’s the best vampire book I’ve read. My review won’t do this book justice so please just bare with me.

There are several types of vampires, they are like humans some are good others are bad, there is a vampire court (vamp politics are a mess), there is a sorta queen, a lead vampire in other tribes and they all fight each other. The Drakes are a prestigious family with lineage that goes back a long way. They are the nice vampires who don’t eat humans and they are actually born not made.

Hearts at Stake is told from alternating perspectives between Lucy who’s real name is Lucky and her best-friend/vampire princess Solange. The two have been friends forever, are really close and have a good relationship. Lucy is strong willed, dramatic (not overly so), violent and funny, while Solange is the caring, artsy, feisty and peaceful (with a hint of a violent streak) type. They get along great and complement each other. Lucy has been around since she was born, she (and parents) know that the Drakes are vampires and the whole clan thinks of her as family.

Two stories are kinda going on at the same time, are winding around each other but still some how one story. One story is about a human who is best friends with a vampire and has been apart of their family since she was a little girl and who is falling in love with her best-friend’s vampire brother. The other is about a special girl who is prophesied about and has a destiny. But both girls go through it together, supporting each other. It’s really good to see a friendship like that, were they are more like sisters.

I really enjoyed this book, the world was different, this was all about the vampire world. Not vampires trying to blend into human society (they do but still are separate), it’s more of a human being in a vampire world because she cares about the whole family, especially her bestie.

Overall 5 stars
Now imagine my surprise when the story turned out to be a retelling of Snow White. Complete with an evil supernatural queen who has a thing for mirrors, who is out to kill the pretty princess, hunter in the woods, the box and a death like sleep. Hearts at Stake had family drama, hunters, fighting, betrayals, deaths, vampires, battles, spying, strong characters, a good plot and twists. I cannot wait to get my hands on this series, yes it was that good, I want the entire series in my hands right this very second.

  1. OMG! I know this is an old post, but I was OBSESSED with this series. Mostly it was because of the swoony Drake brothers! I stopped reading after the 5th book! I’m not sure why, but I think I might reread. They are a guilty pleasure of mine! Great review!
